Shape won't change text font

This is so basic, I must be doing something wrong.

I have inserted a shape onto a page (looks like an arrow) and have some text in the middle (shape properties -> text). But the text properties won't change from Ariel, size 11 and black. I want them to be Nunito Sans, 14 point and white. I set than and click OK and then go back to Ariel, 11, black.

So, what have I missed?

Are you highlighting the text before your set the font/size?
