I'am a new user and I would like to make a scrolling list of names with a gradient background.

You can use a "Marquee" or "News Ticker" for this.

How do I do it?

Just drag & drop the Marquee object to the page and enter the text.
In the style properties you can set a gradient background.

SergeFog, do you mean scrolling from right to left or from low to high?

but where can I find a "Marquee"?
I looked for it in the "Insert" .... but nothing.

You can find the marquee in the Toolbox and the Insert menu.

If you can't find the marquee in the toolbox then I have this one...

That is a paid extension and you can get it by clicking the Paypal button in the top right corner there. It costs $5 but I think if you're shopping for seperate things then you must have a total of $10 before you can proceed to checkout.
