Restore from backup didn't work

I made a major boo boo with my site and wanted to restore the latest backup. So, I went to the backup manager and asked it to restore the latest one. It said it had, but nothing had changed. OK - from the help, it says you need to close the project first. So I did that, but then the backupmanager is greyed out.
I then manually copied the backup file to my working folder and renamed it as the normal file and all is well.
So, what did I do wrong? How is it supposed to work?
cheers
Alan

- start the application, do not open the project
- launch the backup manager via the tools menu
- select the backup you want to restore
- click 'Restore'.

Why is that different from "start application - site file opens automatically (because that is how I set it up) - close site - try and restore, backup manager is greyed out"?

Windows only load the Tools menu when there is an active project.

OK - I am confused. What is an active project if I open WWB with no project?

An 'active project' is the currently open project.
If you close a project then there is no active project.

But if I have the project open, the restore doesn't work. And your help tells me I have to close the project.
I'm missing something.

Open any (new) project except the one you are trying to restore.
The project that is open cannot be overwritten.
