*** SOLVED *** Website not rendering like preview

Post by teterpi »

So far I have an index page with simple 3 column grid repeated down the page for different photos, the middle column different background color. The preview is perfect but on Chrome and Edge, the columns and pictures are irregular...a little different in each browser. I cleared cookies and I delete then upload new files to the host (godaddy). With my initial project, things looked right in both browsers, but I started over and can't seem to get it right. I've got a picture in every middle column with separate layout grid for each one. What are the typical things that cause this? My layout is so simple. I've tried using masterpage for the design, then an independent page.

Do you have a link to the page for us to view?

To be able to help you, we need a DEMO project (.wbs file) so we can see all your settings.

I do not need the complete project because that will only take more time to figure out what you have done.
Basically, I just need a small project with one page and object(s) that are relevant to your question.

Note that I cannot see what you have done based on the published page (HTML), because the software has thousands of options and millions of possible combinations.
So, there is no way to know which options you have used by looking at the HTML only.

For further details about how to share a project file, please see this FAQ:

Yes that makes sense. The software is great, just need more experience. Thanks for your help and patience. I added one page and the related folder at the same dropbox:

Your project seems to be ok, it works for me.
What exactly do I need to do to see the problem?

Thanks. In both edge and chrome, the pages are coming up like the screen prints in the dropbox. I deleted cookies and cache and waited to make sure godaddy's files were updated and available. My computer is an expensive Dell laptop with no obvious problems if that makes a difference. I agree, I can't see anything that would make this come up different than the preview in different browsers. Screen prints in this folder too:

I also downloaded your test project and it looks correct in Edge and Chrome. If it is looking different when you upload to your server then it's usually one of the following:

1. You are missing files that need to be uploaded.
2. There were files that changed (css, js, etc) that need uploaded also. Do a full re-upload to be sure.
3. You are viewing a cached page. Do a hard refresh by clicking Control and F-5 at same time to reload the page
4. Possible server issue
5. You've uploaded the files to the wrong directory. Make sure you are publishing to the correct place

Thank you for that. So I am down to just 1 page only in the file. Are there supposed to be two css files? One is named for the index and the other for the wbs file name.

Depending on what you have checked in the options that would be correct. One is for css styles for the page and the other is for global styles.

Well it is just not working. It's been the same for the last 3 days or more, so I'll assume it's not a server issue at goddaddy. I'll try starting from scratch again... Thanks, it is really helpful to get your answers

I uploaded a page that has been working with no index page that was having the problem. After several control F5's, it's still there. This was the same problem in the past days, so maybe it is a server problem....? Time to call godaddy? It took them forever to get my SSL set up....

Did you upload all files in the right folder?
What is the URL of the page?

I did get the right files uploaded with no subfolder for images per godaddy. So the latest is that I tested this on other devices. It looks correctly displayed on my android phone and my S7 tablet. But on on a laptop and another desktop, it comes up in disarray; also, it was the first time on the second computer. On this test, I copied each grid with photo down the page. Here is the link to the live page on godaddy:

For me, it looks correct in all browsers and on all devices I could test it on.

However, the file names of your images are not web safe. Which may cause issues on some systems.

not to confuse the subject here -
looks like the page you built is a list of news or blog post? if that is the case and you are planning to build each news/blog page indivudually you might look at some of the blog tools to make this faster and easier
if that is not the case, my apologies and please disregard.

onlye - thank you. My logic was it was a simple three column layout with a unique picture with link to the page, purposely simply designed to meet my minimum rqmt. I did try cards and card container, but was having the same trouble getting what I wanted and it seemed easier using my image. I will continue to try various approaches and learn the software. Were you suggesting I look at a template? Thanks for your input :)

I think I got to the bottom of this. I signed up for another hosting provider and uploaded the original files with the layout grids and it came right up just perfect in all the browsers and devices. I'm not sure what is going on with godaddy, but that seems to be the point of failure since there was no trouble with anyone testing my link on this post or my latest test. Godaddy was taking hours or longer to update files. FYI, the new host is tiiny.host. Thanks for all the help.

I'm not a fan of GoDaddy anymore. I've had more issues with websites on their servers than any others.

Thank you for saying that! Today I had my proof I've been waiting for more than a week to get. Today, the index page I loaded yesterday did not come up the entire day until I went to bed at 3am. Then just now, I checked again, and the page is correct, just as you all tested, it's taking more than 24 hours for me to get a clean page. I'm sorry I wasted your time because of ridiculous wait times on updating with godaddy. It will be impossible to use this as a testing platform.

Alternatively, the tests do show that WBS works as expected, so I should be confident that my websites will eventually get updated correctly. Thanks again for helping.
