When you refer to size I take it you are referring to the weight in bytes, kilobytes and megabytes? Size is really as such 100px X 100px. So to answer jpg in kilobytes rather than the same image in png megabytes. Also when adding images in the program it is always best to optimise externally the bring in.

I would also add that size wise, your image should only be as wide and tall as it needs to be for the way you are using it in your project.

For example, most computer screens are 1920px and below so you don't need to add a background image that 3000px wide. I would shrink down your image to the largest it needs to be and then optimize it compress it.

Another example would be if the image is only going to be 400x300 then resize it down to this and don't use an image 800x600.

One of the best places to compress your photos is here.
