index to php

I have a website that is reasonably high in the rankings but I want to put a contact form on the index page so need to change it to php, would I be dropped in the rankings by google if I were to change the index.html to index.php

As Google already reconises the .html as the source, then changing to .php it will take Google time to relocate and then re-rank it. When and if you decide to do so remember to remove the .html from your server. You could also consider using a redirect to the .php and once it is being ranked remove the .html
