redirecting http to https after installing ssl cetificate

Post by rogerl » Tue Oct 18, 2016 8:27 pm

I've recently purchased a 3 year Rapid ssl certificate for my site which has been installed correctly by my Host I now discover I have to have a redirect .htaccess file with information that redirects http to https (or some similar process). My Host seems reluctant to do this for me and tells me its the web developer's job to do this. Well, that's me and I know nothing about the process. Can someone with experience with this help me please.

I'm sorry, I cannot help you with .htaccess. This is file on the server, so not related to WYSIWYG Web Builder.
However there is lot of information about this available on the Internet:

I thought I would put in print how I solved this since a forum is about sharing information so people don't have to go through the same problems I had.
Pablo was right there is heaps of information out there. My problem was the Host was quite happy to install the ssl certificate but when I needed information about the server my site was hosted on and clarification about whether the solution I found was correct and where I should place the code their response was nil. In the end I dived in the deep end and checked out their control panel Looking at their file manager I discovered I had a .htaccess file in place ( a glorified text file that tells the server what to do when loading the site). Using their editor I inserted the following code at the end of the existing code:

Code: Select all

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.
RewriteRule ^ https://www.yoursite.com%{REQUEST_URI} [NE,L,R]
Replace yoursite.com with your site address.
That was easy and it worked. My site now has its green padlock and is recognised as a secure site.
How much easier it would have been if people in the right places (this is not getting at you, Pablo) would share their experience and guide novices on their path.
Regards
Roger

This is great Roger, however certain ISPs (1&1), dispense with "Manual" editing and everything is done through the control panel, thus minimizing confusion and messing up the files.

But a great tip all the same. Thank you.

I had read, while Googleing, that some control panels had a utility for setting rules such as above. But alas not mine. Mine turned out to be a Linux server with Plesk 11. Another reason for more research was the code is supposed to be for Apache based servers. Then some advice said you can't put Apache mod re-write on these servers. Then I found out there is an Apache module for Plesk that allows mod re-write and that's when I decided to go for broke and just try my solution out. It would have been so much easier had the Host just provided basic information and a little guidance.

25-10-2016: Finally received an apology from my Host Service indicating proper procedures were not followed!
Regards
Roger

How about if you want just one particular page of your site to be https?

Short answer - yes. You need to get the rewrite rule correct. I only have Google as my guide. Here is an example I found:
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^443$
RewriteRule ^contact/?$ https://secure.example.com/contact/ [R=301,L]

This will redirect either
http://example.com/contact
-or-
http://example.com/contact/
to
[example.com...]

All of the following requests are properly (301) redirecting:

http://example.com/contact
http://example.com/contact/
http://www.example.com/contact
http://www.example.com/contact/

to:

[secure.example.com...]
Along the same line and from the same source as mine:

Code: Select all

RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^basket\.php$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L]
Here is a link to the official guide:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/rewrite/intro.html
Good luck

Re: redirecting http to https after installing ssl cetificate

Post by CentroVetBologna » Thu Nov 16, 2017 7:42 pm

I have my new SSL certificate, but I didn't manage to redirect the http to https
I tried to create a .htaccess.txt file in FTP Root of the website, as follow:

RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^443$
RewriteRule ^contact/?$ https://www.mywebsite.com/contact/ [R=301,L]

but... it doesn't work.

Where is the problem? Is there the possibility to set the rule in WYSIWIG?

Thanks

Giovanni

Has your ssl certificate been installed?
Is your Host happy they have everything in place?
Did you create a .htaccess file or did you edit an exiting one?
The .htaccess file may be hidden which is why it pays to use the Host control panel file manager to look for it. I have an idea there is another level above the root directory for the site. It's been a while since I went through all this.
Use this code at the end of the existing code:

Code: Select all

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.
RewriteRule ^ https://www.yoursite.com%{REQUEST_URI} [NE,L,R]
yoursite.com gets substituted with your details.
The code you used is for an individual page of a site.

Is there the possibility to set the rule in WYSIWIG?
No, this is unrelated to WYSIWIG. This is a server related issue.

The SSL Certicate is ok, the site runs on https://
In website root there is not .htaccess file, so I created it. How WYSIWIG catch the rules in .htaccess file?

How WYSIWIG catch the rules in .htaccess file?
It can't this you will have to manually write the .htaccess file then upload to your server. Note as already mentioned this is unrelated to the programme and is a server related configuration.
