The first page of the website should be named 'index.html' or 'index.php'
This is server requirement.

Both urls seem to work for me. Like Pablo a .index.html/html/php or also is a server requirement. If you do wish the URL extension to show then you can write a .htaccess this will hide whatever extension used and just display the URL. As . htaccess file is a server related you may need to contact them for further help on how to implement.

You do not need to add .html extension, it will be added automatically based on the Page Properties.

I can not understand what I am doing wrong, I am still getting http://www.infonottingham.city/index.html instead of http://www.infonottingham.city
When I first save the site I save it as infonottingham and in the site manager window it shows infonottingham and below that index.

http://www.infonottingham.city/
and
http://www.infonottingham.city/index.html
are the same page!

What is the exact problem?

Pablo there is some confusion here with chrismunt2424. He has named his project infonottingham which shows above the index in the site manager as mentioned by him. This is what is causing the confusing to what he expects to see once published
as he expects just to see infonottingham without the .index.html

Chris as mentioned to Pablo there is some confusion with what you expect to see. Now infonottingham is the project name not the index page, the index is the generated html and is always the first page called from the server when this is done then index.html is added to the URL in your case it will show as http://www.infonottingham.city/index.html

It might be best to read the following to help you understand how the site manager is used and naming used.
